Summary:
Care for people with cancer involves a multidisciplinary team. For multidisciplinary care to function most effectively, continuity and coordination of care across the professions is required. Evidence suggests that generalist primary care providers are suited to managing patients with chronic and complex conditions, as generalists can provide whole-person, continuous and coordinated care over the patient’s life course. This study aims to optimise multidisciplinary team based cancer care by investigating the perceptions, experiences and expectations of people with cancer, cancer specialists and general practitioners about the role of primary care generalists within multidisciplinary team cancer care.
