Health workforce self sufficiency at a time of global financial crises: desirable? achievable?

Health workforce migration will happen - regulated or unregulated - and international recruitment is attractive to some policy makers, as a quick fix, low cost strategy. In the future we are likely to see increased levels of international
recruitment, and also new models to address the global shortage of workers. This lecture will focus on health workforce self-sufficiency in a time of global financial crisis.

Dr. Stephen Cambell, Senior Research Fellow at the National Primary Care Research & Development Centre, University of Manchester, United Kingdom
The Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI) funded a visit to Melbourne by Dr Stephen Campbell, a Senior Research Fellow at the National Primary Care Research & Development Centre, University of Manchester, United Kingdom. His research interests include: quality of care in primary care, particularly general practice, quality assessment and quality improvement; including an assessment of the new general medical services contract. He has an interest in chronic disease management and comorbidity, with a particular focus on diabetes, coronary heart disease, asthma and mental health. He is involved in ongoing collaborations across Europe evaluating the quality of cardiovascular disease and looking at inequalities in the diagnosis and management of diabetes.

Investing in Healthcare - Australian Financial Review Health Conference

The Australian Financial Review hosted a one day conference titled The Financial Review Health Conference 2009: Investing in Healthcare.
The Financial Review Health Conference presented a timely link between major policy developments to business issues such as private finance, providing a forum for health care, industry players, and policy and thought leaders to come together to discuss the future of the health industry AHWI endorsed this conference.
Prof. Peter Brooks spoke at this conference on health workforce reform.
Nursing Workforce in the US

Professor Paul Clark and Professor Darlene Clark delivered a thought provoking discussion on developments in health-workforce policy and planning in the United States.
Drawing on a considerable body of research, the speakers highlighted the role of nurses' unions in improving the quality of patient care and service delivery.
Professor Paul Clark is Head, Department of Labor Studies and Employment Relations & Professor of Health Policy and Administration, Penn State University and Professor Darlene Clark, Professor of Nursing, Penn State University.
The lecture was introduced by Prof. Sanchia Aranda, Head of Nursing, the University of Melbourne.
Embedding Interprofessional Learning in Primary Health Care and Training

Professor Debra Humphris recently visited AHWI on an APHCRI International Visiting Fellowship.
Prof. Humphris's public lecture highlighted the importance of formally educating health sciences' students of all disciplines in teamwork and inter-professional learning. She highlighted the sucesss that the University of Southampton has had in teaching about interprofessional learning.
The lecture was introducted by Prof. Doris Young, Associate Dean (Academic), The University of Melbourne.
