Career Opportunities at AHWI

AHWI is involved with many different health research projects primarily focussing on interprofessional learning, simulated healthcare, primary health care and health workforce. We are often looking for casual research assistants to work on short term projects with us.

Position Summary

The Australian Health Workforce Institute (AHWI) is an Institute within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS), The University of Melbourne. The Institute was established to pursue opportunities to shape the Health workforce research agenda in Australia. Currently, AHWI is involved in major collaborative partnerships with other leading Australian universities and Health Workforce Agencies. Research assistants will have opportunities to work on projects that shape the Health workforce research agenda in Australia.

It is essential that successful applicants be able to work collaboratively within a team, and work under supervision and with guidance from a senior research fellow. The successful applicant will have strong organisation skills and be able to work to tight deadlines. Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research techniques would be an asset, as well as strong written and oral communication skills. The Institute particularly welcomes applications from individuals with undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in areas such as health economics, population health, human resource management for health, e-Health, indigenous health, or health policy and reform.

Selection Criteria

 Essential

  • University Degree in Health Sciences or health-workforce relevant areas such as Population Health, Health Economics, Social sciences with a health focus
  • Experience in conducting and writing a wide range literature reviews, particularly Cochrane reviews, and evidence –based reports
  • High level written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to use a range of standard computer programs (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft outlook)
  • Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to work in a team, under supervision

 Desirable

  • Experience working on funded projects
  • Experience and knowledge of a range of research methodologies related to applied research (e.g. qualitative and/or quantitative research techniques)
  • Knowledge of the Australian health system an advantage

 Key Responsibilities

  • Contributing to and conducting specific current and planned Health Workforce research projects
  • Working with a team of researchers on funded health workforce research projects
  • Collecting data from research participants including administration of questionnaires and testing function
  • Data management which may include interview data, data entry and statistical analysis
  • Reporting and publishing – this includes sourcing, retrieving and appraising appropriate literature; compiling reports and presenting results including preparation of manuscripts and Power Point presentations
  • Regular liaison and reporting of project progress to team members/senior research fellow
  • Ensuring project timelines and milestones are met
  • Assisting with submission of research grant applications and ethics applications
  • Attendance at Institute/research project related meetings
  • Administrative functions related to the research program
  • Other activities as directed by the supervisor
